Parents & School Based Apprenticeships
Today's modern apprenticeship system is very different to that which existed when parents went to school.
Opportunities now exist to complete an apprenticeship or traineeship in a range of new areas include office administration, graphic design, computer technology and even sports management - no longer are they only available in traditional areas like building, cookery, hairdressing, and automotive mechanics.
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow your child to kick-start their career by commencing their apprenticeship or traineeship as part of their Year 11 and Year 12 secondary school studies.
Family support is vital to ensure young people succeed at balancing the school, work and training involved in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. Parents have an important role to play in enabling young people to successfully make the transition from student to employee.
How parents can help
- Talk with your child about their career goals and the apprenticeship or traineeship which will best support these goals.
- Seek support through their school to discuss how a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship may assist with a university entrance score or entrance into a TAFE course.
- Develop strategies to balance the additional workload of school, work and training.
- Consider and discuss transportation - how will your child get to his or her workplace?
- Discuss the responsibilities involved in being a paid member of the workforce.
- Talk to your child about their day at work and discuss how school subjects relate to their job.
- Encourage your child to talk about issues they may be facing during their SAT and devise possible solutions.
